Child Protection
FOSTER
CARE OR FOSTER HELL: HOW AMERICA FAILS ITS MOST VULNERABLE CHILDREN
Psychologist Ken Goldberg gives a startling analysis of the child protection
system, exposing what has gone wrong and what can be done about it. A seasoned
professional and frequent participant in child protection matters, he explains
how a well-intended system was destined to fail, covering: How child protection
laws are intrinsically flawed; How well-intended social workers unintentionally
hurt children; Why more funding will not mean better care; What it means
to the child to be protected from a parent; How the system stifles creativity
and initiative; What can be done to better serve our kids. Ken Goldberg
is the author of the literary novel Peter Squared, creating characters
that have been failed by the system. Although fictional, humorous and sometimes
absurd, the characters and situations he creates in the book reflect the
insights he's gained working for years with neglected and abused children.
Ken is available as a keynote speaker, workshop leader and consultant. He
will customize his presentation to the unique needs of your professional,
civic or political group.
Sexually Obsessed Men
FROM PEEP SHOWS TO PURE BLISS: SEXUAL HEALTH FOR THE SEXUALLY ADDICTED MAN
Psychologist Ken Goldberg gives a humorous but insightful talk about
men and pornography. Leaning on his personal experiences in liberal (a student
in New Orleans and New York, near Bourbon Street and Times Square) and conservative
(a participant on a pornography task force in Quayle Country, Indiana) parts
of the country, he addresses this issue through fiction in the literary
novel, Peter Squared. In a talk that will prove particularly appealing
to women (confirming how crazy men really are) he will cover: Who goes to
peep shows, why, and do they cause any harm; Why men use pornography and
women don't; How the presence of peep shows and adult bookstores affects
our children, and is prime time television any worse?; How sexually addicted
men and romance starved women can find marital bliss; What nobody said when
they impeached Bill Clinton. Ken Goldberg is a psychologist and author of
Peter Squared, a tale of mathematics, madness, and masturbation, a Pulitzer
Prize nominated literary novel about two sexually consumed men. A book that
would surely have been banned in the 1950s, Goldberg takes controversial
positions on love, sex, and our deepening divide over sexual values.
Obsessive-Compulsive
Behavior
ARE YOU OBSESSED? Do you do things that you don't want to do: again and
again and again? Or worse! Do you live with someone like that? Psychologist
Ken Goldberg, author of Peter Squared (a daring and provocative novel,
the story of a sexually obsessed man) will take you on a fascinating journey,
with vivid illustrations from the arts, through the pained world of obsessive-compulsive
disorder. You will see the crippling, anti-life effects of this disorder
and understand how to overcome and conquer it. You will learn to: Be the
master of you life, not the slave of your obsessions; Live the moment, not
the past; Welcome the future, not worry about it; Love, not detach. Act,
not delay. Ken Goldberg, Ph.D. is a clinical psychologist and a former mathematician.
His novel, Peter Squared, was recently released and is widely available.
Multi-Disciplinary Treatment
Teams
HOW TO PREVENT BURNOUT AND ENJOY YOUR JOB. Therapeutic milieu and multi-disciplinary
treatment team are bywords in community mental health. Required by JCHAO
for accreditation, intrinsic to success at de-institutionalization, these
concepts have nevertheless been scantly developed in the field. The idea
of a team of therapists providing treatment runs counter to decades of clinical
thought, where transference formed with one therapist was considered paramount
for change. Upon graduation, many new professionals find that in their first
jobs they work on treatment teams, with little clear relevance to the skills
they learned in school. Yet, many find success and satisfaction in this
work, their experience heavily dependent on how the team functions. In this
presentation, Dr. Goldberg addresses: How to enhance treatment by addressing
team process; How to avert burnout; Managing crisis, not letting crises
manage you; Organization theory, organizational structure, effective team
work; The Quilt-Work Theory, a model for team treatment; Inpatient, residential,
day and vocational applications; Applications for adults, adolescents and
children; Special considerations for child abuse. Ken Goldberg is a clinical
psychologist. He developed his model, the Quilt-Work Theory, in a day treatment
program. The model is broadly applicable to all team settings. It allows
the staff to increase its therapeutic power, reduce crises and avert burnout.
Above all, adherence to the QWT allows staff to avoid stress and truly enjoy
their work. Ken Goldberg is available as a keynote speaker to conduct professional
workshops and for individualized program consultation.
The Search for Truth
A MULTI-DISCIPLINARY DIALOGUE Truth is beauty, beauty truth. That is all
ye know and all ye need to know. – Keats (Ode to the Grecian Urn) The poet
tells us that truth and beauty are one and the same. When first a mathematician,
Ken Goldberg realized his discipline was more philosophy than science: a
vehicle, not the answer in the search for truth and beauty. As a psychologist,
he learned that the truths we perceive are often stronger than those we
can prove. Now an author, Goldberg shows through his literary novel, Peter
Squared - a tale of mathematics, madness, and masturbation - the power
of perception and relationships in the quest for knowledge. In a talk designed
for college audiences Goldberg shares his experiences in each of these fields,
sharing insights regarding our universal search for truth and beauty. Dr.
Goldberg specifically invites joint sponsorship of his talk by English,
Psychology and Mathematics Departments.
